Waterway Restoration Alliance

The AAWRA is an alliance of communities, dredging officials, Chesapeake Bay associations and trusts, and boaters on navigable waters in Anne Arundel County supporting deeper tidal water channels, sediment reclamation, tidal habitats, and natural fisheries.
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the AAWRA shall be to promote the restoration of Anne Arundel County waterways by dredging and related actions as needed to:
  • maintain historic and adequate channel access,
  • reduce and/or eliminate the amount of sediments,
  • protect and enable natural shoreline habitats.

The AAWRA maintains an electronic mailing list to keep everyone informed about the activities and discussions conducted by the members of the Alliance. Recent Meeting Notes
September 29, 2009 Bob Whitcomb presented and discussed the letter sent to Delegate Robert Costa referencing the conflict between state and county on responsibility for waterway markers and buoys, a letter from House of Delegates Michael Busch correspondence regarding the reduced funding of the Waterway Improvement Fund and a copy of the dredging list of county submitted Waterway Improvement Program Grant Funding Project Priority List for FY11. Special guests presenting included Chris Phipps, County Chief Engineer, and Masoud Ghatineh, Chief of Environmental Engineering for all County Dredging of Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works Bureau of Engineering and Keith Tate, and Kendra Scheminant, a Dredging Program Manager from Bayland, from Bayland Consultants & Designers the county's consultant contractor.
April 28, 2009 President, Bob Whitcomb of AAWRA started the meeting by sharing a less enthusiastic letter from House Speaker Michael Busch in response to an attempt by AAWRA to preserve the use of the DNR Waterway Improvement Fund (WIF) due to the economic down turn. Also reported were presentations by AAWRA officers made to both House of Delegates and the Senate during the recent Legislative Session.
January 27, 2009 Annual Meeting was held to summarize efforts in 2008, elect new Board members and discuss plans for 2009. In attendance was special guest Jennifer Mook of Bayland Consultants.
